Take the Canal Towpath from Broad Ripple along Westfield Avenue. You will cross Central, Kessler and Meridian Streets. Continue to Illinois and cross to the west side of the trail over the light blue bridge. On the left will be Butler University. Pass underneath Michigan Avenue and you will see the Indianapolis Museum of Art grounds to the left. Turn right off the trail at the White River Trail sign. At the Naval Armory continue on the White River Trail along Riverside Park. Be very careful when you cross 16th Street especially coming back north. It is very difficult to see west on 16th over the bridge. The old Bush Stadium will be on your left. To continue south cross the suspension bridge. Cross at the traffic signal and continue south along the river. Asphalt changes to concrete as you ride along the developed banks of the White River. The hospitals are on your left. After crossing New York Street you will see IUPUI and its sports facilities on your left. The Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens are across the zoo bridge to the right. Continue left to access the Eiteljorg, NCAA, Indiana State Museum and the Canal Walk.
Notes:
  • The Canal Towpath is crushed limestone and can get very dusty, and very sloppy, depending on the weather.
  • Get a bell on your bike. Wow, this has saved a lot of problems. Ring it well back so walkers and runners can panic, be confused etc. before you even arrive. Mostly people look back and move to the side. They even thank you for the warning.
  • Great wildlife along this trail. I have seen Blue Herrons, Wood and Mallard Ducks, beavers, various turtles, and if your lucky the Peregrine Falcon around downtown.
  • This is as good as it gets in Indy. With almost no traffic, this is also as safe as it gets.
